Dilaksanakannya UTS/PTS SMP ini bertujuan untuk menguji kemampuan peserta didik/siswa yang sebelumnya telah mendapatkan pembelajaran di awal semester 1. Masing-masing sekolah SMP biasanya mempunyai komposisi penilaian nilai UTS yang berbeda. 
Pelajar yang nantinya mendapatkan nilai UTS/PTS sesuai standar KKM/KBM yang sudah disepakati oleh waka kurikulum dan juga dewan guru maka dapat dipastikan bahwa Pelajar tersebut sudah memahami materi yang disampaikan oleh Bapak/Ibu Guru. 
Akan tetapi, jika siswa mendapatkan nilai kurang dari KKM guru, peserta didik dapat melakukan perbaikan soal dan melaksanakan program remedial. Akan tetapi di beberapa sekolah program Remedial ini ditiadakan karena waktunya yang dianggap mepet dengan Ujian Akhir Semester (UAS). 
Sehingga daripada melaksanakan program remedial, biasanya sekolah akan lebih mengutamakan para Siswanya untuk segera bersiap menghadapi UAS.
